Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government is committed to democracy and transparency: Kang
Chandigarh, October 6 (WISHAVWARTA):- The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Member of Parliament, Malvinder Singh Kang, said that the upcoming Panchayat elections in Punjab, scheduled for October 15, are cornerstone of democracy and outlined the measures taken by the AAP government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to ensure fair participation and protection of citizens’ rights.
Addressing the media on Sunday, Kang noted that the AAP government is dedicated to empowering the people of Punjab, making sure they can engage in the democratic process without fear. “The elections are not just a formality; they are an essential event in our democratic system, and we want every citizen to participate actively and freely,” he stated.
Kang also criticized previous governments, including the Congress, Akali Dal, and BJP, for abusing their power and undermining the electoral process. “For over two decades, Panchayat elections in Punjab have been marred by manipulation and violence. The current AAP government, however, is committed to transparency and democracy,” he said.
Kang presented data comparing the number of nominations for the upcoming elections with those from 2018. “In the last Panchayat elections, when the Congress was in power, approximately 48,111 nomination papers were submitted for the position of Sarpanch. In contrast, this time, under AAP’s governance, that number has surged to 52,825,” he revealed.
Similarly, for the position of Panch, the data shows that in 2018, there were 162,383 nominations submitted for the position of Panch. This year, that figure has risen to 166,338 nominations. “This is a clear indication that our government is encouraging citizens to take part in democracy, and they are responding positively,” Kang remarked.
Kang also expressed concern over recent incidents of political violence. “It is disheartening to see that our party members have become victims of violence. Just yesterday, in Jalalabad, a candidate named Mandeep Brar was attacked by goons affiliated with the Akali Dal while he was going to submit his nomination papers. This kind of political thuggery has no place in a democratic society and must be condemned,” he asserted.
He called on the people of Punjab to stand firm against the violence and intimidation historically perpetrated by opposition parties, including the Akali Dal, Congress, and BJP. “We urge the citizens to reject the politics of fear and violence. Let us participate in the elections and show that we will not be silenced or intimidated,” he said.
Kang highlighted the contrast between AAP’s approach and the past practices of rival parties. “Whereas previous governments would often resort to violence and intimidation against those who dared to participate in the electoral process, specially during Panchayat and local body elections, our government is fostering an environment of openness and encouragement. We are here to support the citizens in exercising their democratic rights,” he stated.
In conclusion, Kang reinforced the message of empowerment and participation. “Under the leadership of CM Bhagwant Mann, the AAP government is focused on enhancing democratic engagement and ensuring that every voice is heard in our Panchayat elections. The increase in nominations is a testament to our efforts, and we believe that together, we can build a stronger, more democratic Punjab,” he concluded.
