Punjab Budget to Strengthen Transport System and Improve Jails: Laljit Singh Bhullar

Budget Allocation of Rs 11,577 Crore for Home, Justice, and Jails Departments for FY 2026–27

Punjab Government to Add 1,279 New Buses to Existing Roadways and PUNBUS Fleet

Chandigarh, March 8 (WISHAVWARTA);- Punjab Transport and Jails Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar welcomed the Punjab Budget 2026–27 presented by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, stating that the budget will strengthen the state’s transport system and bring improvements in jail administration.

In a statement issued here today, Bhullar said the budget not only provides a solid foundation for further progress across various sectors but also gives significant support to the ongoing reform initiatives in the Transport and Jails Departments. He added that the Mann-led Punjab Government has always prioritized transparency, efficiency, and public welfare, and the provisions in the budget will help accelerate these reforms.

Speaking about the progress of the Transport Department, Bhullar said that over the past few years, the Punjab Government has taken decisive steps to modernize the state’s public transport system. He stated that while free travel facilities for women will continue, the government will also add 1,279 new buses to the existing Punjab Roadways and PUNBUS fleet. These buses will be equipped with modern safety features and accessibility standards. Through improved financial management, operational reforms, and modernization initiatives, Punjab Roadways and PRTC are being strengthened to provide safe, reliable, and affordable transport services to the public.

The minister said the government is committed to increasing access to public transport for citizens and further improving passenger amenities and operational efficiency. He added that a focus on infrastructure development and road connectivity across Punjab will enable the department to extend its services effectively to both rural and urban areas.

Regarding the Jails Department, Bhullar said the Punjab Government has adopted a comprehensive strategy for prison management, focusing on security, transparency, and rehabilitation. He added that a budget of Rs 11,577 crore has been allocated for the Home, Justice, and Jails Departments during FY 2026–27. Significant efforts are being made to strengthen jail infrastructure and improve surveillance systems using modern technology.

Bhullar further stated that the state government is committed to transforming jails into reformative institutions that focus on inmates’ reintegration into society. Prisoners are being provided with skill development, workshops, and educational programs to equip them for productive lives after release. He noted that these initiatives create opportunities for social reform and personal development within correctional facilities.

Bhullar said that the Punjab Budget 2026–27 clearly reflects the government’s commitment to people-centric governance, economic growth, and institutional strengthening. He emphasized that the budget is dedicated to implementing reforms in the Transport and Jails Departments and improving overall service delivery.
