Menstrual Hygiene Day 2024: MCC aims to make a lasting impact on Chandigarh’s sanitation standards and community empowerment

Chandigarh, May 29(WISHAVWARTA)_:- Aiming to make a lasting impact on Chandigarh’s cleanliness journey, the Municipal Corporation conducted an awareness campaign under the “Swachhata Ki Mohar” initiative to promote effective sanitary waste management in the city.

On International Menstrual Hygiene Day, the MCC, in collaboration with DAY-NULM, spearheaded an awareness drive on sanitary waste management and sanitation in the community. Women Self-Help Group (SHG) teams engaged in Indira Colony, Manimajra, Sanjay Colony, and Industrial Area Phase 1, raising awareness about hygiene and sanitation practices, with a specific focus on the proper disposal of sanitary waste.

Through a comprehensive approach encompassing awareness, identification, recognition, sustainability, and community empowerment, the initiative aims to leave an indelible mark on the path towards a cleaner and greener Chandigarh.

Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, said that the MCC is committed to promoting sustainable waste management practices and creating a clean and healthy environment for all residents. She emphasized that the “Swachhata Ki Mohar” initiative aims to educate citizens about sanitary waste and sanitation, inspiring and empowering individuals to take ownership of their surroundings and contribute to the overall cleanliness and sustainability of the city.

The Commissioner further said that the MCC’s efforts have already yielded tangible results. Initially, the daily collection of sanitary waste was only 12-15 kilograms, but over the last two years, it has increased to 650-700 kilograms. The Corporation has been processing the sanitary waste through the authorized biomedical waste processing agency, Alliance Care, in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016.

This exercise will continue citywide in the coming weeks to make all residents aware of proper sanitary waste management.

During the initiative, in association with Ms. Geetanjali, CSR Coordinator at Versatile Group (Ludhiana), and Prof. Seema Kapoor, Faculty Advisor at Enactus Panjab University and State Vice President of Corporate Sustainability Council, Women’s Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CSC WICCI), Chandigarh, under CSR project Amodini, 4,000 reusable sanitary pads were distributed to the women in Indira Colony, Manimajra, Sanjay Colony, Industrial Area Phase 1, and Bhaskar Colony, Sector-25, recognizing their commitment to maintaining sanitation standards.

Bhakra Beas Management Board officials, in collaboration with the Municipal Corporations team also made citizens aware in Bhaskar Colony, Sector-25.

The Municipal Commissioner appealed to all citizens to segregate their sanitary waste and hand it over to the municipal garbage collector. The “Swachhata Ki Mohar” initiative, which coincides with International Menstrual Hygiene Day, aims to raise awareness and improve sanitary waste management, educating and empowering municipal staff, communities, and citizens on effective practices.
