MCC celebrates International Day of Yoga
Empowering communities with members of Self Help Groups at Maloya
Chandigarh, June 21 (WISHAVWARTA):- Aiming to bring the community together and inspire positive change in society and civic lives, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh celebrated International Day of Yoga today with the Community Self-Help Group members at the EWS, Maloya Community Centre.
With the theme “Yoga for Self and Society,” aligned perfectly with the Municipal Corporation’s mission to use yoga as a tool for community development and individual well-being, the event featured yoga sessions led by a certified instructor, educating the SHG members on the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of regular yoga practice.
While speaking about the empowering communities mission, Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, said that Yoga has the power to transform individuals and communities. By engaging the SHG members, the MCC not only promoting health and wellness but also building social cohesion and empowering women to be agents of change in their communities.
She further stated that the International Day of Yoga event is part of the Municipal Corporation’s ongoing efforts to leverage SHGs as a platform for social and economic empowerment. The well-attended yoga camp underscored the strong relationship between the Corporation and communities, as well as the impact of the “teach a woman, teach a generation” approach, along with the Swachhata Ki Mohar initiative by MCC under the convergence with DAY-NULM and SBM.
Commissioner said that today’s event was a testament to the power of yoga to bring people together and inspire positive change. The MCC is committed to continuing to explore ways to use yoga as a tool for community development and personal growth, she added.
She further said that Yoga teaches the importance of mindfulness and leads the community towards sustainable living. By making environmentally conscious consumption choices in daily life, people move forward with a greener and more balanced lifestyle.
The Municipal Corporation urged citizens to follow the 3R principle by segregating waste effectively, adopting composting at home, carrying cloth/jute bags for shopping, saying no to single-use plastic, choosing eco-friendly products, and embracing a ‘Zero Waste’ lifestyle to enhance health and cleanliness for a sustainable future.
