Hyderabad Metro facilitates transportation of heart, lungs
Hyderabad, Aug 1 (IANS/WISHAVWARTA) Hyderabad Metro Rail turned into a life-saving corridor as it facilitated transportation of heart and lungs from a donor for transplantation on Saturday.
The Metro enabled priority medical transit from CARE Hospitals, Gachibowli, to KIMS Hospitals, Minister Road, Secunderabad, in just 25 minutes.
The time-sensitive transportation was from Raidurg Metro Station to Rasoolpura Station, a distance of 14 kilometres. The stretch has 13 stations, and the transit took 25 minutes.
The transit was executed through seamless operational coordination, ensuring the timely movement of the donor organs during a critical phase of the transplantation process, said Hyderabad Metro.
This mission was carried out through close coordination between Hyderabad Metro Rail, healthcare professionals and hospital authorities, reinforcing Hyderabad Metro’s role in supporting time-critical medical interventions.
L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (L&TMRHL) remains committed to supporting emergency healthcare initiatives, extending the role of urban mobility beyond transportation to enable life-saving medical interventions, it said.
Meanwhile, KIMS Hospital, Gachibowli, has successfully performed a robotic-assisted mitral valve replacement on a 37-year-old patient from Rajahmundry, marking a significant milestone in minimally invasive cardiac surgery in Hyderabad.
According to Dr Nisarga, Chief Cardiothoracic, Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgeon, the patient, an accountant employed with a prawn export company, had been suffering from severe mitral stenosis caused by chronic rheumatic heart disease.
The doctor explained that the mitral valve is located between the left atrium and left ventricle and normally allows blood to flow freely from the upper chamber to the lower chamber of the heart. In mitral stenosis, the valve becomes thickened and narrowed, reducing blood flow and placing strain on the heart. If left untreated, the condition can lead to serious complications and may even become life-threatening.
The complex procedure was performed on July 23 and lasted for more than five hours. According to Dr Nisarga, robotic intracardiac procedures continue to be uncommon in Hyderabad, and robotic-assisted mitral valve replacement remains a relatively rare surgery in the city.
