FIFA World Cup final: Meghalaya CM declares holiday in schools

Shillong, July 19 (IANS/WISHAVWARTA) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Sunday announced that all schools and colleges across the state will remain closed on Monday to allow students to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final without worrying about attending classes the following morning.

In a video message posted on social media, Sangma said the state government had decided to declare a holiday for all educational institutions in recognition of Meghalaya’s deep-rooted passion for football.

“The government has decided to declare a holiday for all educational institutions in Meghalaya, including schools and colleges. Enjoy the finals… Who are you supporting?” the Chief Minister said in the video message.

The FIFA World Cup final is scheduled for late Sunday night, and the decision is expected to allow thousands of football enthusiasts, particularly students, to watch the title clash without disrupting their academic schedules the next day.

Football occupies a special place in Meghalaya’s sporting culture, with the state producing several accomplished footballers and hosting numerous prestigious domestic tournaments over the years. The sport enjoys immense popularity across urban and rural areas alike, with international football events drawing large television audiences.

The state government said the holiday reflects Meghalaya’s unique sporting culture and acknowledges the enthusiasm of young football fans who eagerly follow global football competitions.

The announcement was widely welcomed on social media, with many users praising the government’s gesture towards students and football lovers. Several students also expressed excitement over being able to enjoy the World Cup final without having to wake up early for classes on Monday.

Meghalaya has consistently promoted sports as a tool for youth development, with football receiving special emphasis through investments in sports infrastructure, grassroots programmes and the hosting of national-level competitions.

The latest decision by the government underscores the state’s longstanding association with football, often regarded as Meghalaya’s most popular sport, where major international tournaments routinely generate widespread public interest and community celebrations.

The FIFA World Cup final is expected to attract millions of viewers across India, with Meghalaya likely to witness one of the highest levels of public engagement among the Northeastern states.
