JD Vance credits wife Usha Vance for role in his return to Christianity Washington, June 22 (IANS) US Vice President JD Vance has credited his Indian American wife, Usha Vance, with helping shape his return to Christianity, saying her support in their interfaith marriage and her influence on his understanding of love, family and commitment played a crucial role in his spiritual journey. In a candid interview with New York Times columnist Ross Douthat, Vance said his relationship with Usha transformed not only his personal life but also the way he viewed faith after years of atheism and spiritual uncertainty. “I had this epiphany — which is overstating it — but I realised that falling in love with Usha made me realise that there was actually something sacramental to love,” Vance said. The remarks came as Vance discussed his new memoir, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, which traces his journey from a turbulent childhood and eventual loss of faith to his conversion to Catholicism. Vance said his early connection to Christianity weakened after the death of his grandmother, whom he described as the anchor of his religious life. “When my grandma died, that was my anchor to Christianity,” he said. “It’s really no coincidence that my grandma died and, like, two years later, I called myself an atheist.” For years, he drifted away from religion. He immersed himself in education, professional ambition and personal achievement. Looking back, he said those pursuits ultimately left him unfulfilled. “The thing I realised is that this kind of striving had made me pretty hollow,” he said. The turning point, he suggested, came through relationships rather than theology. Vance spoke extensively about Usha, whom he married before entering national politics. Although she does not share his Christian faith, he said her support became an important factor in his decision to return to religion. “I felt kind of guilty, actually, about returning to my faith with all the demands that come with me,” he said. He described the realities of raising a family while practising his faith, noting that his wife embraced responsibilities she had never expected. “I think about this every single Sunday when I take my 36-week-pregnant wife, who is herself not a Christian, and us and our three kids, and they’re late getting their shoes on, and they’re always misbehaved,” Vance said. “She did not sign up for this. She signed up to sleep in on Sundays and not have to deal with this.” Yet, he said, her response never wavered. “But she does it with incredible patience, and her being not just OK with that but supportive of that journey was like almost confirmation or a sign that it was OK for me to go down this pathway.” According to Vance, Usha fundamentally changed his understanding of marriage and relationships. “The thing about relationships, and I think all millennials experience this, because we all grew up in the same culture, is there was this sense in which there was nothing sacred about romance,” he said. That changed when he fell in love. “Usha, even though she’s not a Christian, she really changed how I thought about the union of man and woman together, and she changed how I thought about it. Without even realising it, I thought about it in a very, very Christian way.” Vance also credited Christian friends and families for helping guide him back to faith. Many of the people he most admired, he said, were Christians whose lives reflected values he increasingly wanted to emulate. “At some basic level, I had some really good friends who were really good people, and they showed me the truth of faith by the way that they conducted themselves in the world,” he said. Now 41, Vance said becoming a husband and father forced him to confront deeper questions about meaning, responsibility and purpose. Those questions eventually led him back to Christianity. Usha Vance, a lawyer and the daughter of Indian immigrants, has emerged as one of the most prominent Indian American figures in US public life since her husband’s rise from senator to vice president. While largely remaining outside day-to-day political debates, she has become a familiar presence on the national stage. –

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann campaigned for Hoshiarpur candidate Dr. Rajkumar Chabbewal, addressed a huge rally in Bhulath

Bhagwant Mann alleged – In March 2018, Khaira had written a letter to the Electricity Board that he wants to give up subsidy on his 10 motors, saying he will pay for it, but till date not even a single rupee has been paid

Mann fiercely attacked Bhulath MLA Sukhpal Khaira – We will defeat him from Sangrur and send him back here, people of Bhulath should also teach Khaira a lesson for abandoning you

Bhagwant Mann promised to the people – We will ensure compensation to the farmers for the Jammu-Katra highway and highway will have cuts at various places so that local people can also do profitable business

The Mann government is the first time that the common people of Punjab have felt that this is their own government – Dr. Rajkumar Chabbewal

Hoshiarpur/Chandigarh, May 24 (WISHAVWARTA):- Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday campaigned for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from Hoshiarpur, Dr Rajkumar Chabbewal. Mann addressed a public rally in Bhulath and appealed to the people to make the Aam Aadmi Party win by 13-0.

While addressing the people, Chief Minister Mann fiercely attacked Congress leader and Bhulath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira. He said that I guarantee that he will remain your MLA because we will defeat him from Sangrur and send him back here.

He said that Sukhpal Khaira does not go anywhere to win elections. He goes to defeat someone and make someone else win under collusion. Last time he contested elections from Bathinda to make Harsimrat Kaur Badal win. He was paid a lot of money for this.

He said that if Sukhpal Khaira did not do illegal work and corruption, then from where did he get so much land and money? Mann appealed to the people of Bhulath and said that next time you should remove him from the MLA post because he had abandoned you.

Bhagwant Mann accused Sukhpal Khaira of misleading people in the name of electricity subsidy of his motors and said that on 15 March 2018, Sukhpal Khaira wrote a letter to the Electricity Board to create a good image among the people in which he said he would give up the electricity subsidy of my 10 motors of Ramgarh. He said he will pay the bill. But till date he has not given even a single rupee, whereas the annual electricity subsidy of his 10 motors is Rs. 4 lakh 36 thousand.

Mann also attacked the BJP and said that this election is an election to save the Constitution and democracy of the country. BJP wants to destroy the Constitution. If they win this time, they will change the Constitution, then there will never be elections in India. The situation here will become like that of Russia, where President Vladimir Putin has made a law for himself to remain in power for life.

He said that the BJP does the politics of caste, religion and hatred. It is trying to spread hatred in Punjab too. But its politics of hatred can never succeed in Punjab. Punjab is known for mutual brotherhood and social harmony. People here celebrate Gurpurabs, Eid, Holi, Diwali and Navami together.

Chief Minister Mann, while recounting his work of two years, said that we have given government jobs to 43 thousand youth of Punjab without any discrimination. In one village, 40 people got jobs. He said that for the convenience of common people, I made electricity free and arranged for sufficient electricity for farmers without any power cuts during the day, so that their time and energy is not wasted. At the same time, for the first time in the history of the country, our government bought a private thermal power plant. Now there is no shortage of electricity in Punjab.

He said that this morning an elderly person from Patiala came to meet me and said that he wanted the party flag. I said what will you do with the flag? He said that I am a labourer, but because of you six people of my family got government jobs due to which the condition of my family has changed. That is why I want to campaign for you.

He said that I am improving government schools to give good education to the children of Dalits and poor. Green card, blue card and yellow card cannot remove poverty from anyone’s house. Only your child when educated can eradicate poverty from your houses. Therefore, improving the education system is my first priority.

He said that I have not come here just to ask for votes for myself. I am asking for votes for a better future for your children, good health facilities, for traders, small shopkeepers, farmers-labourers and temporary employees and for building a better future for them.

Mann promised the people of Hoshiarpur and said that for the Jammu-Katra highway, we will get proper compensation from the central government for the farmers and the highway will have cuts at various places so that local people can also do business. He appealed to the people that I have made your electricity bills zero, you make the seats of Congress, Akali and BJP zero.

*The Mann government is the first time that the common people of Punjab have felt that this is their own government – Dr. Rajkumar Chabbewal*

Addressing the people, AAP candidate Dr Rajkumar Chabbewal said that under the Mann government, the common people of Punjab have felt for the first time that this is their own government. He said that earlier Chief Ministers did not come out of their homes, whereas Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is among the common people every day. He said that the farmers, youth, labourers, businessmen and people of all sections of Punjab are happy with the work of the Mann government.
