AIMS, Mohali Observes Swachhata Hi Sewa Celebrations to mark Gandhi Jayanti at Campus
SAS Nagar, October 2, 2024 (Satish Kumar Puppy):- Dr B R Ambedkar Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS Mohali) celebrated the Swachhata Hi Sewa initiative with a series of impactful events aimed at promoting cleanliness and environmental sustainability to mark Gandhi Jayanti, today at Campus. The day’s activities were enthusiastically attended by professors, staff, students all united in their commitment to the Swachh Bharat mission.
Undertaking first event in the name of
“Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” Activity (One Tree in the Name of Mother), each participant planted a tree in dedication to their mother or a motherly figure, symbolizing growth, care, and a cleaner future. Dr. Amrit Virk introduced the significance of “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, explaining how this act connects environmental responsibility with honoring motherhood.
The tree plantation ceremony was led by the Director Principal Dr Bhavneet Bharti. The event was designed to foster environmental stewardship while paying tribute to the nurturing role of mothers.
Following the tree plantation, the celebrations continued in the auditorium with a range of activities focused on cleanliness and solid waste management.

Director Principal Dr. Bhavneet Bharti and Dr. Sonia Mehta, Associate Professor of Microbiology, presented a comprehensive action plan for solid waste management for both the college and the hospital, that included strategies for effective waste segregation, recycling, and waste disposal.
The Director Principal announced the Cleanliness Target Units, identifying specific areas within the campus and hospital for cleanliness drives. Students, faculty, and staff from various batches actively participated, ensuring widespread involvement.
Teams from MBBS Batch 2021 and Batch 2022 were assigned to the hospital for thorough cleaning and maintenance, while Batch 2023 took charge of the college premises. Additionally, NSS volunteers from Shaheed Major Harminder Pal Singh Government College, Mohali, under the leadership of their faculty members, Mr. Ashish and Mr. Sharanjit Singh, demonstrated their commitment by cleaning the common road and the ‘Patiala Ki Rao’ area. Their dedication to making these public spaces cleaner and safer added great value to the overall initiative.
Emphasis was given on the role of the community in maintaining cleanliness, with students and faculty collaborating in this nationwide effort.
To keep the Safaimitras (cleaning staff) healthy, a medical check up camp led by Dr. Amrit, Dr. Amit Aggarwal and Dr. Ashish Goel was conducted including hemoglobin testing.
Dr Bharti said that to make the drive part of daily life, Participants gathered to submit reports on the cleanliness drives and to discuss future action plans for maintaining cleanliness on the campus and in the hospital. The celebrations concluded with a Swachhata Pledge, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to a cleaner, healthier environment.
