Delhi-NCR wakes up to heavy rain, thunderstorms; IMD issues red alert across 11 districts
New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS/WISHAVWARTA) Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms lashed Delhi on Monday morning, bringing a noticeable dip in temperatures and causing waterlogging in several areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for all 11 districts of the national capital, cautioning residents about intense showers, lightning and strong winds.
According to the department, there is a high possibility of thunderstorms and heavy rain accompanied by strong winds in Central Delhi, East Delhi, New Delhi, North Delhi, North East Delhi, North West Delhi, Shahdara, South Delhi, South East Delhi, South West Delhi, and West Delhi. Wind speeds could reach up to 60 km per hour in these areas, along with lightning and heavy rain with winds exceeding 15 mm per hour.
The early morning downpour covered the national capital with thick clouds and brought temporary relief from the prevailing warmth. However, the latest seven-day forecast suggests that the rainfall is unlikely to persist, with partly cloudy skies expected over the coming days.
The maximum temperature on October 13 is forecast to remain between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely to range from 23 to 25 degrees Celsius. On October 14, the maximum temperature could climb to 33-35 degrees Celsius, with the minimum expected to remain between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius.
For October 15, the weather agency has predicted a maximum temperature of 31-33 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 23-25 degrees Celsius. Temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable on October 16 and 17, with maximum readings between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures ranging from 22 to 24 degrees Celsius. Partly cloudy conditions and no rainfall are forecast for these days.
The IMD had earlier cautioned that heavy showers could disrupt traffic, lead to the accumulation of water in low-lying areas and increase the likelihood of road accidents. Commuters were advised to check traffic updates before leaving home, follow official advisories and avoid routes vulnerable to waterlogging.
The latest spell of rain comes after temperatures across Delhi recorded a decline over the preceding 24 hours. According to the weather department, maximum temperatures had fallen by around one to two degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures showed little variation.
Minimum temperatures during that period ranged between 21 and 24 degrees Celsius, while maximum readings were recorded between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius.
Residents have been advised to remain alert during thunderstorms, particularly while travelling, as strong winds, lightning, and waterlogged roads could pose safety risks during the morning commute.
