Vigilance Bureau nabs ASI red handed accepting bribe of Rs. 30,000/-
Chandigarh, 14 July 2026 (WISHAVWARTA);- The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) during its ongoing drive against corruption in the state, has apprehended Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI)Avtar Singh posted at Sadar Police Station, Morinda, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs. 30,000/-.
Disclosing this here today, an official spokesperson of the state VB said the above-mentioned accused has been arrested based on a complaint lodged by a resident of village Chatamla tehsil Morinda district Ropar.
He informed that the complainant is engaged in agriculture work. His late father has about 6 acres of land on lease from Waqf Board for 99 years, which is being cultivated by him. A dispute arose when an other party, Tejpal Singh, forcibly cultivated part of this land and destroyed two acres of maize crops. On which he registered his complaint. But the police has taken action on the application of the other party Tejpal Singh and registered a case against the complainant and his mother. This case is being investigated by accused ASI Avtar Singh.
He said that ASI Avtar Singh demanded a bribe of Rs. 50,000/- to drop complainant’s mother name from the case. Upon requesting, ASI Avtar Singh agreed to take Rs. 35,000/- as bribe and took Rs. 5,000/- as bribe money from the complainant and asked to pay the remaining bribe Rs. 30,000/-.
Unwilling to pay the remaining illegal gratification, complainant approached the VB Flying Squad SAS Nagar. Acting on his complaint, the VB team laid a trap during which the accused ASI was arrested red handed while accepting bribe money of Rs 30,000/- from the complainant in presence of two official witnesses.
In this regard, a case under prevention of corruption act has been registered against the accused at VB police station SAS Nagar and further investigation into this case is under progress.
