MC Commissioner reviews bulk waste management & fire safety compliance; Reiterates zero tolerance towards violations

Chandigarh, January 9 (WISHAVWARTA): In line with the Solid Waste Management (MSW) Rules, 2016 and Swachhata guidelines, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today held a high-level review meeting to strengthen bulk waste management practices and ensure strict compliance with fire safety norms across the city.

The meeting was chaired by the Commissioner, MCC, Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, and was attended by Joint Commissioners, Medical Officer of Health, concerned authorities of various and other senior officers of the Corporation. The focus of the meeting remained on effective waste segregation at source, scientific management of bulk waste, and enforcement of statutory safety and civic regulations.

During the review, the Commissioner emphasized that bulk waste generator management is mandatory for all establishments including commercial units, institutions, residential complexes and other premises generating large quantities of waste. He directed that all such establishments must ensure 100% segregation of waste at source, maintain updated records, and strictly adhere to the provisions of the MSW Rules, 2016. Any deviation from the prescribed norms will invite strict action.

Reiterating MCC’s commitment towards cleanliness and environmental protection, the Commissioner categorically stated that dumping of waste on vacant land or open areas is strictly prohibited. He warned that violators will be dealt with firmly as per rules to discourage unhygienic and illegal waste disposal practices.

The meeting also reviewed fire safety preparedness across establishments. The Commissioner directed all stakeholders to ensure regular inspection and timely updation of fire-fighting equipment, keep systems in proper working condition, and conduct periodic awareness and demonstration sessions for staff. Officers were further instructed to verify that expired or unsafe products are not stored or used, and that electrical systems are regularly checked and upgraded to prevent fire hazards.

Additionally, strict compliance with the Advertisement Act was reiterated. Establishments were reminded to display advertisements only at permitted locations and strictly as per prescribed guidelines, failing which penal action will be taken.
Concerned departments were directed to intensify inspections, ensure on-ground compliance of MSW rules, fire safety norms and advertisement guidelines, and submit action-taken reports within stipulated timelines.
The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh reaffirmed its resolve to enforce Swachhata and safety norms in a time-bound and transparent manner, seeking active cooperation from all stakeholders to make Chandigarh cleaner, safer and more compliant with statutory regulations.
