FSSAI Cracks Down on Illegal Mango Ripening Practices
New Delhi, May 19 (WishavWartaTimes) – Amid concerns over the use of banned calcium carbide, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a stern warning to mango traders to adhere strictly to the prohibition on calcium carbide for artificial ripening of mangoes, especially during the mango season.
The FSSAI has also instructed the Food Safety Departments of States and UTs to remain vigilant, take serious action, and deal stringently with those engaging in such illegal practices as per the law.
The national food regulator endorses the use of ethylene gas as a safer alternative for ripening fruits.
“Ethylene gas can be used at concentrations up to 100 ppm, depending on the crop, variety, and maturity. Ethylene, a naturally occurring hormone in fruits, regulates the ripening process by initiating and controlling a series of chemical and biochemical activities,” stated the FSSAI.
Calcium carbide, on the other hand, releases acetylene gas containing harmful traces of arsenic and phosphorus.
These substances can cause serious health issues such as dizziness, frequent thirst, irritation, weakness, difficulty in swallowing, vomiting, and skin ulcers.
“There is a risk that calcium carbide may come in direct contact with fruits during application, leaving residues of arsenic and phosphorus on them,” the food regulator warned.
Furthermore, the FSSAI urged consumers to report any use of calcium carbide or wrongful practices involving ripening agents for artificial ripening of fruits to the concerned State Commissioners of Food Safety for appropriate action against violators.
